Something unusual that happened that day

I am pretty certain that there have been quite a series of unusual events occurring these days. Well, for me at least, my experience was probably the most unusual one has ever been through. For thirteen years, I never knew the true side of my own mother. It may seem banal and not that interesting to those reading this right now but like said, experience justifies everything. Obviously to me, my mother’s character that evening did not cease to amuse me.

My mother had always seemed very anti-social to me. The kind who never mingled. Phone calls for her were rarely noticed. She barely even spoke to her own son, which was none other than myself. “Mum why don’t you like to go out for parties, dinners, movies and have fun?” The number of times I had repeated this question to her was an eternity to her ears, always fuelling to her posture which was not that of repose but agitation and anxiety. Her response would be nothing more than a stare and an irritated look.

It may seem macabre, but I had always wanted my mother to mingle more. One of the reasons was the fear of her wanting me to go on the same path. Well I was completely the opposite, I just never showed it. The thought of her nagging at me was already more than enough to annoy me.

I was doing my homework that day when it seemed to me that a large group of people broke in the house, blasting music and singing. It was more like noise to my ears. As the thought of it being a figment of my imagination or probably a zoo, sprang up, I ran to the living room to see what had happened. My jaw dropped. It literally dropped.

I stared at the crowd of old aunties barging in the house dancing. There were no less than 50 people if I recall correctly. My mother was the last to enter. She was jumping. The shock which struck me was no less than that of someone suffering from a heart attack. My mother skipped towards me. “Son! Meet them! My friends!” Amused at her statement, I smiled a fake one. She then carried on confessing that she actually sneaked out at night to visit them and that she would be bringing them over every day from then on. My dad was also aware of it all along.

Thoughts which were once a delusion actually came true in the form of a hard slap across my face. I knew that I have to tolerate these aunties from that day onwards. My mother would also not sneak out anymore and she would actually go out more often. That was the plus point. However, what actually occurred to me the most was that my mother actually sneaked out and that she mingles. I found it really unusual. Well as a recount, I hope those who read this actually found it bizarre too! It might have sounded raw and silly but it did to me too when I actually found out what a weird family I actually lived with.

I would suggest from now on that you do not spend too much time thinking about one’s inner character and self as you never know what they might turn out to be like!

How I spent my Chinese New Year

Hey guys, I know that I have not posted up anything on my blog for the past few days, simply because I was in Malaysia, for a religious camp- like outing with the people of my religion which is being Jain. For all the people, who do not understand or have never heard of the religion “Jainism” then here is a short summary that might interest you.
Jains are people who are vegetarian and believe in non-violence, we pray to a god by the name of Lord Mahavir. There are around 350 Jains in Singapore and we have our very own temple and society. Jainism is one of many Hindu religions. Every two years, the Jain society holds a retreat in Malaysia at different resorts. Jain speakers are flown in from all over the world to share their knowledge with us over the 3 day – 2 night stay.

On the first day...
I got up at about 7.30 and after freshening up I headed to the bus depot. I enjoyed my bus ride as I got together with my friends during the bus ride and played games on the bus. After a 2 hour bus ride, we all reached the resort. My parents collected out room keys and we headed to our room to unpack and settle down. Later on, as a community, we all gathered in the ball room for lunch. It was a moment I particularly enjoyed the most because all of us Jain youngsters got together and ate lunch while sharing laughs. After lunch, we went bowling swimming and played soccer. Soccer was the most fun because its was “BOYS versus GIRLS” and it was really funny as the girls could hardly kick the ball and were screaming after every goal they conceded. At that night, there was an opening ceremony and all the four jain speakers who were flown in from different places around the world were introduced to us. Later on, there were dance performances put up by people of all ages followed by a drama. Since it was a long day, after the opening ceremony, everyone went to bed because we all had a really long day, including my parents.
On the second day...
After breakfast, everyone was split up according to their age for example, people from ages 13- 25 had to go to a certain room for their lecture, thus everyone was with their own age group including the senior citizens also. I enjoyed my first lecture alot because I got to understand why all Jains were vegetarians and that was the question that was on my mind for a very long time. For the rest of the evening, we sat through different lectures from different speakers and we did not feel bored or lethargic at all because we were learning about interesting topics and we also learnt more through playing games that were more hands on. “Behind everything, there is a reason.”
Well, since we were all due to return back to Singapore the next day, we decided to stay up that night as a group and have fun. We all met up at the pool side at about 10.30pm and had a blast there as we played cards till four in the morning and to keep us awake, we all munched on sugary candies.
On the whole, the camp was really fun and I also got to learn alot more about my religion that will definitely help me in the future because of its important learning points. Even my grandparents and parents enjoyed the camp thoroughly because even they learnt more about our religion in a different way!

A moment spent alone doing something you enjoyed
Last weekend, my parents went overseas for two days and since they were out, I was home alone and not allowed to go out of the house because I had to keep an eye on my new maid and old aged grandmother. Since I am such a positive person, I looked at the bright side of my situation. I decided to have my very own television marathon and I settled down on my couch with a bag of potato chips and a can of coca-cola. Sadly, my marathon only lasted two hours before I got bored.

I then went on my computer and started watching insane soccer skills videos on YouTube while I chatted with my friends. Well this activity only lasted me one hour before boredom hit me again. I decided that since I was getting bored, it would be better if I did something productive and the first idea that struck me was “cleaning up my room” because if anyone came into my room at that point of time, they would have thought that there was a huge robbery in my room because it seemed as if someone ransacked my drawers and rummaged through my clothes and books!

When I was cleaning my upper shelves, I came upon a huge photo album filled with my pictures taken when I was young. I sat down on my bed and looked through the photos. While I was looking through, I felt sad when I saw pictures of me playing cricket and chasing late grandfather and pictures of my grandmother feeding me food and carrying me with her two arms with a big smile on her face, showering love on me. It’s such memories that I cherish, of my loved ones for years to come because the values they instilled in me can never be forgotten and the impact they left on me will always be remembered.

There were even pictures of my crying when I was forced to take a shower ( because I hated showers when I was young) and my favourite picture was my dad holding me up with pride as if he were saying “That’s my son!” It was such images that helped me recall my past because after all, “ A picture speaks a thousand words”. On the same shelf, there was a thick file full of my drawings and school work I did in Kindergarten. As I browsed through the file I looked at all my spelling worksheets and I had gotten full marks for almost all of them because I remembered my mom making me memorise every spelling in detail the night before my test and now all that effort has paid off. After all,"a son is what his mother made him".

MOMENT YOU ENJOYED WITH YOUR FAMILY
Yesterday, I had loads of fun with my family. I think I had not had this much of fun with my family in as long as I can remember. With my dad being a workaholic, my brother being busy with his studies and my mother who’s time is always taken up by house chores, we can never find time as a family to go out together and have a ball of a time.

Well, yesterday my dad decided that we all go to the beach for dinner at a restaurant. We decided to go to the beach early to book a table at the restaurant, but we found out that the whole restaurant was booked for a party on that same evening. The manager told us that we would not be able to dine there but we could certainly pack the food in containers and eat it somewhere else. My dad decided we would sit by the shore and have a picnic. I dreaded the thought of that idea because my parents and brother were not the type of people I could easily open up to.

When we all sat down at the picnic table, there was an utter silence because no one knew what to talk about! My mom then uttered a riddle,” There is a one storey house in, which everything is blue. The carpet is blue, the walls are blue, the floors are also blue, etc. So what is the colour of the flight of stairs?” My dad and brother shouted loudly “BLUE!” and my mom broke out laughing. “You fool’s! The house is one-storey thus how will it have a flight of stairs?” my mom asked them. We all ended up laughing, sharing funny moments with each other as a family.

My brother and I are ardent football fans and upon seeing a soccer ball on the beach, we started playing beach soccer. We would purposely pull each other shirts when we were on the verge of scoring or rugby tackle each other (if we did such a thing in a real soccer match, we would be shown a red card on the spot).

On the whole, having such a family outing was really fun and I hope to have more of these activities.

A DIFFICULTY I FACED

Personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead writing this, but since I’m such a nice guy and everything I figure I might as well try. I hope this doesn’t sound too corny.
Life is full of difficulties, sometimes things are so tough that it makes us want to give up. I’m sure the few of you who are actually reading this know what trying to say. I mean come on, how many of you lived a single day absolutely perfect day before, with the sun high up, white clouds floating in the seemingly endless sky, lying down on a soft patch of grass without a single worry and having your mother not shout at you. I mean that is my ideal perfect day, I’m not sure of yours.
Difficulty is usually associated with choices. This will bring us worry. What’s the current biggest worry in life? Some might say that it is the global recession; others might say that they are stressed in school. One difficulty I face was actually choosing the correct secondary school for me. There were a lot of choices for me after the PSLE. There was the obvious choice, Victoria, or the alternative, ACS (for those who do not now what that is, it stands for Anglo Chinese school) I was very confused as most of my friends are going to VS, but I have been to ACS before and I feel that the study environment has a much richer feeling. I’m not saying that Victoria is bad or anything, but ACS seems so classy and fancy, their library was state-of-the-art and the school was so well equipped for classes, CCAs and outdoor activities alike. Even most of my good friends were in ACS that’s why I wanted to put it on the top of my list of schools, but there were many obstacles in the way. For one ACS was very far away from my house, I would have to wake up earlier than 6 in the morning and I wouldn’t want that. Another problem was that transportation was a big problem because I would have to change buses twice and that would be a big hassle! When I talked to a few of my older friends, they would tell me that their school would end a 3pm and would reach home at 5pm tired and sleepy(because of the long bus ride). The reason I have brought this up after such a long time was because I have thought of this difficulty many times before and I have thought over it many times thus I feel its right to share this with you now. On the whole, I have no regrets about joining Victoria at all because of the my great teachers and friends and after all,” it’s a place where I belong ”.

That’s all for now=)
